(1) Alex Smith

Seems like Martz is raving about him, saying he could be the best QB he's ever coached. Well, it's no surprise at this point because Alex has the physical tools to impress people. It's still too early to accurately gauge the QB situation and we'll have a better idea in training camp. But I do expect Alex to be the starter, not because he's that good but because Hill and JT just aren't as effective in this offense.

(2) Frank Gore

I'm disappointed that he showed up 12 pounds overweight. It doesn't bode well for potential injuries and stamina, nor in terms of veteran leadership. Guys like Roger Craig, Jerry Rice and Bryant Young never came into camp out of shape; they set an example by working even harder in the offseason. And for an RB, physical conditioning is absolutely essential with all the work and pounding he gets. I suspect we'll see quite a bit of Foster this year, both due to fatigue and a higher risk of injuries to Gore. Biggest disappointment of minicamp, imo.

(3) The Rookies

Rachal at OG and Balmer at DE have been getting a lot of work, which is expected. I haven't heard much about their performance, aside from the fact that Rachal has looked mobile and quick. But I do agree with Barrows (I think it was) who said that Rachal's long legs might give him trouble inside, especially against NFL tackles. I sure hope Baas comes back 100%, because I'm not convinced that Rachal can be an effective NFL guard right now. I suspect that Balmer will get the starting nod at DE alongside Soap at NT and Smith at DE. They are the 3 most talented linemen on the team.

(4) Pass-rusher on the edge

I'm concerned about this. Manny will be a solid all-around OLB, but we don't have a single guy who has proven to consistently generate heat on 3rd and long. The upgrade of our DEs will definitely help, as the line will get some push. But the lack of an edge rusher means that the secondary will be constantly tested with pass attempts.
