Two-a-days are over, but there is still another week of the 49ers' practicing in "camp mode." Here are a few impressions about some of the other positions in which throwing the football is not part of the job description:
--Rookie who has been the impressive: WR Josh Morgan. He has remained healthy, and that's extremely difficult for a lot of rookie receivers. Morgan is the most impressive rookie receiver I've seen in 49ers camp since Terrell Owens. (Yes, he's been far better in his first year than Ryan Thelwell, Tai Streets, Cedrick Wilson, Arnaz Battle, Brandon Lloyd, Rashaun Woods, Derrick Hamilton, Rasheed Marshall, Marcus Maxwell, Brandon Williams and Jason Hill.)
--Best offensive lineman: RT Jonas Jennings. The 49ers figure to be a strong-running team to the right side.
--Biggest question mark on O-line: The left side. Nobody doubts Joe Staley will be a good player, but it's going to be difficult on him this season as he shifts to left tackle. Also, Adam Snyder has been inconsistent at left guard. Some think he might be better-suited at tackle.
--Don't be surprised, if . . . : G Tony Wragge finds his way into the starting lineup on a full-time basis. Right now, he's filling in for RG David Baas.
--Don't worry about . . . : RB Frank Gore. He'll fit into the offense, no matter what he's asked to do. He might get some rest this season with DeShaun Foster behind him as a capable backup.
--Still some questions: TE Vernon Davis. Sure, he's a unique talent. Sure, he's capable of big, big things. Although his numbers should be expected to take a bump, it's difficult to guess exactly how he'll be used in Mike Martz's scheme.
--Two vets who appear worth the money: CB Nate Clements and DE/OLB Justin Smith. The 49ers are compensating them handsomely, but they still practice like rookies who are trying to make the team.
--Don't worry about . . . : LB Patrick Willis. His tackle numbers will take a dip this season. The 49ers don't figure to be on the field for as many defensive snaps as a year ago. And this season, Takeo Spikes will be lining up to Willis. They'll be competing for the same tackle on a lot of plays. But Willis is an elite player. He might record a few more sacks and create more turnovers than a year ago.
--Camp battles for defensive roster spots: It looks now as if the team will keep either Tully Banta-Cain or Roderick Green (OLB); and either Marcus Hudson or Keith Lewis (DB).
--Opening some eyes: DE Ray McDonald looks as if he's developed nicely in his second NFL camp. He'll get his share of offside penalties, but he might be the X-factor when it comes to generating a pass rush from the defensive line.
--Rebounding from knee injuries: Both OLB Manny Lawson and CB Tarell Brown look really good after sustaining anterior-cruciate tears. Lawson had surgery and is at full strength. Brown had just a partial tear and reported to camp in tip-top condition, too.
--Competition for starting jobs: ILB Spikes would seem to have the edge over Jeff Ulbrich, who is still running with the first unit. Spikes is learning the system and is constantly being coached to his assignments; and FS Mark Roman appears to have the veteran edge over second-year player Dashon Goldson; and FB Zak Keasey has been running with the first unit instead of incumbent Moran Norris.
--As for that position that's getting a lot of attention. I get the impression that the players at other positions have stayed out of the politicking, and for good reason. Nobody - maybe other than Gore - is good enough at his job at this point to spend time worrying about what's going on at another position.AOR
