I was thinking about this the other day: If Smith isn't the QB, didn't he lose his job due to injury

Isn't that a basic unwritten rule in sports?

He was the undisputed starter at the beginning of last season.

His performance in the first three games wasn't particularly good (though he did lead that end of game drive to beat Arizona in the first game). But, in retrospect we know the O cooridinator in over his head.

He played in 3 games after than, 3-4 weeks after the injury, but we know he was still hurt.

So, he lost the starting role due to the injury suffered in the 4th game of the season. Barring recovery from that injury, he should have been the starting QB entering camp, according to the unwritten rule.
