but, I am not particularly disappointed. My ideal scenario was for them to have a shot at Julius Peppers. His presence would have elevated all the other defensive personnel. The amount of attention he would have commanded would have really made that 3-4 start clicking from a pass rush perspective. Which would also improve the secondary.
But, it seems unlikely they will try and trade for him.
If that is the case I would like to see some interest in Jason Taylor. Which they might have, but some other teams do to.
On the offensive side of the ball I think they can get a lot from the draft, whether that be a WR (Robeski, Bey, Britt), OT (Andre Smith, Oher), RB (my personal favorite 3rd rounder is Andre Brown). The above would require a 2nd, 1st, and 3rd in an ideal world. But there are also some good safety prospects in that range as well.
So that leaves two big gaps, QB and pass rusher.
IMO, I am in no rush to add a QB. I wasn't a big fan of the Warner pursuit, he's definitely better, but his limitations might have negated his any advantages he might bring on this team (lack of WR and suspect o-line).
I think Shaun Hill has proved himself capable at least for the short term. Everyone wants to look to the future, have that young QB for the next ten years lined up. I don't think that is realistic. They should keep looking for opportunities, but they should concentrate on building the team for 09, not worrying about 10-15.
People (tom tolbert, for example) say you only win Super Bowls with 1st round QBs. Well, the Niners might still have one on the roster. I am willing to give him one more shot just because it is not every year you invest a #1 pick in a QB. If they think Sanchez is that much better, maybe they should take him at 10, but I don't think they do.
So, in summary, I am fine with them going into the season with Hill at QB and Smith at backup.
Pass rushing is tough. I think Manny Lawson brings enough on the field that he should stay on the field as much as possible. You would like to get that added pass rush from him. Harrelson has proven to be a pretty good pass rusher, but he doesn't seem to have the explosion to draw a lot of attention on a consistent basis. Ahmed Brooks is another possibility. He has all the talent, but know knows, we haven't seen him on the field at all.
The draft seems as confusing as ever. is there a demarcus ware or shawn merriman in this crop of olb/de's? Orakpo might be the safest and the most likely to be picked before 10. Maybin and Everett are undersized. Barwin and English are intriguing, will they make it out of the first?
thus far in the offseason, seems like they still have a lot of work to do.
