Crabtree: extremely soft hands, natural receiving skills and appears to understand the nuances of the game. Lack of top-end speed isn't a death sentence, but it does limit his upside and will require a tremendous work ethic and consistency to reach star status.
But my biggest concern is the overall direction of this offense. The Niners have expressed an unwavering dedication to the running game and ball-control offense, got rid of Martz and brought in old-school "I coached Dickerson" Raye. And so it's quite weird and troubling that their primary offseason acquisitions so far have been:
-- a pass-blocking OT with a bad back (M.Smith)
-- two starting-quality WRs (Jones and Crabtree)
-- zero RBs
Our offensive line is built for pass-protection (Staley, Heitmann, Marvel), and our lone RB is out of shape and coming off a disappointing season. I don't see a dominant running game in the making, not even close at this point.
And if we don't have a dominant running game, then this offense isn't going anywhere because we certainly don't have the QB nor the OC to consistently win with the passing game. Just seems like we're neither here nor there. We have six WRs, one RB and an OL that's better at pass-pro than opening holes...and we're supposed to dominate teams with the run? Not seeing it.
