Date: April 2, 2009
Eval Position(s): RB - Running back

Height: 6'0?
Weight: 209

Bench Press: 24 reps
Vertical Jump: 36?
Three Cone: 7.35

Best Fit Position/Role: Feature back
Ideal Scheme/Role: One cut running scheme

Games Scouted: Clemson, Florida, Utah

Strengths: Coffee is a slashing running back. He is a physical runner with a good stiff arm. He shows nice burst through the hole. Runs with good balance. Coffee can be productive running the ball either inside or out. Shows nice ball security and has big hands for a RB. Has good agility and flexibility. Runs with nice leverage despite being taller than most other backs. Is able to wear defenses physically. Is a big play threat once in the open-field. Has soft hands and can be utilized on swing passes and screens. Has good passs catching form. Shows good awareness as a blocker. Will take on pass rushers rather than lunging and try to take out their legs. Has a strong upper body with good thickness in the chest and shoulders. A leader on the Alabama team who teammates were drawn to after previous trangressions.

Weaknesses: Has a thin lower body. Doesn't show great leg drive or strength. When hit he goes down without much of a fight, even though he seeks out contact. His breakaway speed is only average, and he can be caught from behind. Doesn't always have a great feel for the blocking in front of him, and can make questionable decisions in this area. Not a seasoned route runner, and has only been utilized on swings and screens. Although a gym rat, he will need to add bulk in his lower body once he reaches the NFL.

Overall:: Coffee was a suprise to declare, but he should be productive in the NFL. He has an aggressive running style, and has the skills to develop into a good one-cut runner. He will likely be a third round pick based on his average timed speed and ability to contribute right away.

Injury Concerns: Redshirted in 2006 due to knee injury.

Could be as good as: Ryan Grant - Green Back Packers
Worst Case: Lynell Hamilton - New Orleans Saints

Where he'll probably go: Late 3rd to early 4th
Were he should go: Late 3rd to early 4th

04/24/2009 - The more I hear from NFL analysts, it seems the less I know. Even levels of research you can't imagine and these guys look into everything, can't tell you when a guy is really going to be drafted. That's why we watch...Still, it has been interesting to note a recent trend involving former Alabama running back Glen Coffee. His stock is rising and rising. And when we got a hold of Glen on the phone, we could ask him, why? Except, he's not sure. On yet another stop on our draft preview train, listen to what the All-Southeastern Conference back said he is hearing from NFL teams: "Basically half the NFL is real high on me," Coffee told me Thursday. "Some like me real good, and the ones who don't just don't stay in touch. I don't know where I'm going. But I've talked to a couple coaches, and they don't think I'll last past the late second (round). A couple of other guys (think) it'll be somewhere in the third round." - Ian R. Rapoport, The Birmingham News

04/09/2009 - Coffee might have benefited from another season in college. He is probably more aggressive than he will want to be at the next level, where the competition won't be intimidated by his penchant for taking on defenders rather than avoiding them. A weight-room warrior, Coffee is well-built in terms of upper-body muscularity but has thin hips and is not especially powerful at his core. He has good quickness but only average speed, as evidenced by a best 40-yard time of 4.52 seconds at the combine. Coffee had some personal and maturity issues and was suspended for four games in 2007 as part of a scandal involving the receipt of extra textbooks not authorized under terms of his scholarship. Since then, he has become a faith-driven, community leader. Coffee started 17 of 35 games and gained 2,107 yards with 14 touchdowns on 410 carries (5.1-yard average). He caught 42 passes for 351 yards and two scores. - Frank Cooney, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com
