Clearly, the Niners got nervous that someone would trade up to the twelfth spot if they didn't take Davis eleventh. And, actually, someone did trade up to the twelfth spot. So maybe there was a good reason.
As I've mentioned before, Davis makes me nervous, but his potential is through the roof. Before the combine, he was considered by many a top 5 pick and perhaps the best tackle in his class. This was a gamble worth taking, I think. Coach Sing and Ray Brown should be good motivators. His initial response was extremely positive - he said this was where he wanted to be, and he seemed genuinely excited. Also, his coach at Rutgers said he's a hard worker who loves football. So I have hope that he will work out, despite my initial misgivings.
Most 49er fans I know were hoping for Iupati. He's a classic mauler and the consensus top guard in the draft. Many have compared him to Larry Allen. I expect him to make a few Pro Bowls.
I was looking at the players available in the second round, and realized I could disregard the offensive linemen...and my heart was filled with joy. This is a good day.
