I'm kinda curious why it's taken this long to come out.
I've seen a lot of recent articles mentioning that this is a fan base that's used to Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Steve Young. But nobody ever talked about it when it's been clear that over the last few years they have been implementing a more smashmouth running type of offense and dismantling everything that was left from when they last had success.
In the past the Niners had an identity: precision passing offense. There were great years and not so great years, usually dependent on how well the defense played, but through it all there was the same philosophies on offense, and that was the heart of the team. It's also the reason that a lot of people outside the area adopted the Niners as their own.
What would Pittsburg fans do if the Steelers decided they were going to run a spread offense and try to outscore people? What if the Raiders decided they would only take players with spotless records? Many are fans of those teams because they have a tangible philosophy that the fan can identify with. The Niners don't anymore. There's not much more than geographical proximity and routine that keeps me rooting for this team.
