There is no doubt that the relationship between the coaching staff and former starting quarterback Alex Smith is deteriorating.

There is a good chance that the 49ers won't pay Smith his $8 million option bonus next March, one that would secure contract seasons for the 2009-10 seasons. If they don't pay, Smith will have a base salary of $2 million next year.
